Traditional British carvery dishes

The "Toby Carvery Chelmsford" in Chelmsford, England, is a classic British restaurant that calls itself the "Home of the Roast" and specializes in traditional carvery dishes. Located near Chelmer Village and Great Baddow, it is a popular meeting spot for families, friends, and anyone who appreciates the taste of an authentic British Sunday roast – and not just on Sundays, but every day of the week. The restaurant is part of the well-known Toby Carvery chain, which has been famous for its hearty roast dinners for over 35 years, offering a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere that invites guests to stay awhile.

Cozy restaurant in Chelmsford

Upon entering the "Toby Carvery Chelmsford," you are greeted by a cozy, traditional pub ambiance. The decor is warm and casual, with wooden furniture and a rustic touch that highlights its British character. Especially on busy days, such as Sundays, there is a lively atmosphere, complemented by friendly staff who are always eager to provide guests with a pleasant experience. The focus is on a self-service principle at the carvery deck, where guests can fill their plates as they wish – a concept that not only offers flexibility but also conveys a sense of abundance and generosity.

Delicious breakfast buffet in Chelmsford

Culinarily, the restaurant is known for its hearty, slow-cooked meat dishes that form the centerpiece of its offerings. Highlights include the juicy roast beef, which is topped with a rich beef fat glaze and melts in the mouth. Also popular is the hand-carved turkey, served with a savory sage and onion stuffing – a classic that particularly appeals to traditional diners. The sides are another highlight: the roast potatoes are hand-ruffed to ensure extra crispiness, and the Yorkshire puddings come fresh, fluffy, and hot straight from the kitchen to the plate. For vegetarians, there are alternatives like the vegetable roast with a melting Camembert center, which can be paired with fresh vegetables from the carvery deck. For dessert, the sticky toffee pudding variation, served with warm vanilla sauce, offers a sweet ending.

In addition to the main dishes, the "Toby Carvery Chelmsford" also offers a hearty breakfast buffet that attracts guests daily wishing to start their day with a substantial meal. The breakfast featuring bacon and poached eggs stands out, complemented by a selection of fresh baked goods and jams. The drinks menu includes a wide range of beers, ciders, wines, and non-alcoholic options that perfectly complement the hearty dishes.

Authentic British Sunday roast

Service is another strong point: the staff is often praised for their friendliness and efficiency, although it can sometimes get a bit hectic on particularly busy days like Sundays. The restaurant places importance on catering to individual requests, whether it’s for special dietary needs like vegan options or organizing group visits. For larger parties, it’s recommended to make a reservation in advance to ensure sufficient space.

We love coming to the Toby carvery, all of the staff are really nice, Jaime served us last time and she was really friendly and helpful, my favourite is the Mac and cheese! I like it so much that we are going back today for more! Thanks again! Sophia Horton

They are closed for a refurb from tomorrow. Consequently certain food items were not available. Might try them again at a later date. Our waitress was apologetic and kind.

The building is almost dilapidated and scruffy. Really needs some work. Service was ok but staff seemed unmotivated. Nobody was rude and staff seemed pleasant enough. It’s just a tired, scruffy place with dry food.

Poor service and the veg was dried out and thin on the ground. The server of the meat wasn't very friendly either. Not rude but certainly blunt.

It is great value, good food, and friendly attentive staff. The decor lets it down, only my opinion.

We have visited many times over the years but unfortunately this time round the person greeting us at the door was really unprofessional and rude. There was a range of comments that she made throughout her time they made this an uncomfortable experience. Such a shame!

Whatever you do, never order take away from here. Ordered, turned up without the meat. Called to see if they can send it, to which the guy on the phone says 'guess they f'd up in the carvery' and then told me there's no meat left. SHAMBLES!!

Outstanding Experience with Exceptional Service I had an absolutely excellent experience at this establishment. The staff were incredibly friendly, professional, and attentive. I usually visit the Basildon location, where, unfortunately, the service can be quite indifferent—aside from one of the managers and the staff serving the meat. However, the team in Chelmsford was truly outstanding. Despite arriving quite late, with only half an hour before closing, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. They even offered us a small box to take home any leftovers, which is something we’ve never been offered before. The food was outstanding, but what truly stood out for my partner and me was the exceptional customer service. I highly recommend this location and will definitely be returning.

9.40am, we wanted breakfast. Carpark was filthy - litter everywhere. Properly ground in stuff, not just blown there after the recent winds. It needs a good clean. The carpark has no white lining for the bays, so appears to be a free for all. Outside seating looked run down and dirty. We walked in to what amounted to a ghost town - no staff anywhere! After 5 minutes we were greeted by a very sullen faced woman who sauntered over with no enthusiasm nor smile. We felt as though we were an annoyance rather than paying customers! We were given our mugs for breakfast, they were gritty and felt dirty. Went to the buffet area, and the plates were also gritty. Someone needs to look at the dishwasher - it needs a good deep clean! Food was plentiful, but just tepid. Everything looked as though it had sat there for at least 2 hours. Eggs were all fried hard, not a runny one in sight. Bacon was flabby, beans had a crust on them! The coffee was watery and tasteless. The sausages were delicious though! We didn't see a soul on leaving, so couldn't feedback to anyone. We wont be returning.

Food all over the food counters, gravy spillages and empty gravy pots. Had to ask and wait for fresh gravy and Yorkshire puddings
